A walk down a California Boardwalk soaked in sunshine, Two Steps Ahead combines equal parts Nico and Brian Wilson.
LK: "This is a song I wrote in high school, and I've carried it around a really long time. I always imagined Nico or Lou Reed's vocal stylings on it, as I discovered the VU when I was in my teens. It's built around a Tele strum and my Mosrite bass, which I was cooking on Bill Wyman-style. Jeff adds slick slide guitar, Mike adds his Strat twang, and Robert goes Charlie Watts on the drums. We use the calliope-esque Portatiev, and to really give it a "boot", we bang a Tympani during the choruses. I think this song is infectiously happy, despite it's dark lyrical side, and it's a great joy to play live."
lyrics
TWO STEPS AHEAD
You know that when I walk I
Might be dead
And you know that when I call you I'm just
Two Steps Ahead
But the way you make me feel at night I
Just can't see
The way we see each other is so
Simple to me
La la la la la la la
We play with each other like
We don't feel much
But I know that occasionally yeah
When we touch
I see the ocean side and a
Pretty shore
You make me feel this and
So much more
